-
Perimenopause is the transitional period leading up to menopause. It often begins in your 40s, although symptoms may start earlier.
Common signs include changes in menstrual cycles, hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood changes, and vaginal dryness.
Diagnosis is usually based on your symptoms, age, and menstrual history rather than a single hormone blood test.
-
In most women over 45, hormone blood tests are not necessary to diagnose perimenopause.
Hormone levels can fluctuate significantly during this transition, making individual test results difficult to interpret. Testing may be useful in certain situations based on your age, symptoms, and medical history.
-
Yes. FDA-approved bioidentical hormone medications include certain forms of estradiol and micronized progesterone.
These medications differ from custom-compounded hormone products, which have not undergone the same FDA review for safety, effectiveness, and quality.
-
Testosterone therapy may be considered for appropriately selected women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), following a comprehensive evaluation.
Testosterone use in women is off-label in the United States. Treatment requires a discussion of benefits and risks, along with appropriate monitoring.
-
Hormone therapy is not the only option.
Depending on your symptoms and medical history, we can discuss evidence-based nonhormonal prescription medications and individualized strategies for sleep and overall well-being.
